We try, as often, as possible, to design things using "common" parts .. parts that are readily available in reasonable quantities from a variety of suppliers.
Designing something that includes a CRITICAL part that's ONLY produced by ONE company that sells MOST of its production the GM and Ford, so that you have to place orders for huge quantities months in advance is, in our opinion, irresponsible.
Is it as bad as all that ? Well, no, not usually. But it DOES happen. And sometimes it happens because that's the only part that will do the job. But sometimes it happens because that's the easiest way to do the job, and the designer took the easy way out.
