1 Since I'd taken everything else apart, I saw no reason to not finish the job and remove the gearbox, especially since when I got the machine, the gearbox had no oil in it. The area around the headstock had lots, so I was hoping it was just a leak and not a crack.
2 A slightly different angle. It sure looks like they could have squeezed another gear ratio in here...
3 And here's the reason for the leak. The top (blue) gasket is off the lathe, and is missing a chunk along the lower part of the box. Some clown at Chicago College (hopefully not the instructor) had removed the box, damaged the gasket and put it back anyway. In the bottom is a homemade one that I was originally going to use. Up top on the left is a can of the gasket goop is usually use when replacing things on my motorcycles. While retrieving that, I found a long forgotten tube of Locktite 515. This is supposed to be able to make a gasket. I decided to use this instead; we'll see.
