The plumbing on First Edition was also in need of work. The toilet was a bottom of the line old Jabsco in need of rebuild, with the hoses undoubtedly clogged. It sat on a wobbly platform and dumped straight overboard. Finally, the through-hull shutoff was hard to get to. A lot of attention was required. Note the bolt ends protruding through the wall; they support the table on the other side of the bulkhead but are going to be trouble soon. The solution is button head cap screws, mounted in reverse; nice and smooth. (Yes, all three were replaced). Half of the plumbing project finished. The toilet is a Raritan PH2. I spent the whole winter thinking about this and reading everything, and it was always the same .. "a Crittenden or a PH2" .. "a Groco or a PH2" .. " a Lavac or a PH2". Every conversation about good manual toilets included the PH2, so when I found one in stock at the local supplier, a decision was made. Locating it, though, THAT was a problem. I spent a full day doing so, but eventually found an angle and location that was comfortable to sit on, where the handle did not foul on the cabinetry or bang you on the knees when using the basin, the lid opened fully, the shutoff could still be reached, the bulkhead door opened fully and so on. I added a water strainer as it seems as if a lot of smells are are rotting seaweed and such that got stuck in the toilet passages. Here's a close up the hose leaving the toilet pump and the hose out of the through-hull. It's very tight. Here's another closeup; the pump butted RIGHT up against the cabinet. Still, it fits. And another view. Now to finish off the wiring.
And the plumbing now done. One change from the conventional is the venting. Typically, a holding tank would use a single 3/4" vent. However, another source of smell is said to be caused by anerobic bacteria (that result when there's not enough oxygen) breaking down the waste. Aerobic bacteria though, do not smell, and so the more air that goes through the tank, the better. I went with two 1" vents, for better than 4 times the ventilation.
